Each tick entry typically includes a sub-second timestamp (often down to milliseconds or microseconds), the exact execution price, the quantity traded, and a condition flag indicating exchange or venue rules.

How it works

Every time an aggressive buyer or seller crosses the bid-ask spread and matches with resting limit orders on the exchange matching engine, an event tick is generated.

Trade ticks track executed volume delta, while bid-ask spread analysis requires quote data and full market depth analysis requires multi-level order-book updates.

Why it matters

Unlike time-compressed bars, tick data preserves the exact chronological sequence of every price change, eliminating intrabar path ambiguity in backtests.
